Formerly part of the Delphi estate, this deceptively large rental property is a reconstruction and extension of two 19th century cottages, merged into one home of great character. There are no other buildings in sight. Clad in local stone, roofed with traditional Welsh slates and fully insulated to modern standards, Waterfall Cottage has all the charm of a period property with all the benefits of modern reconstruction. It is filled with light and has stunning views in all directions. The cottage sleeps eight people in great comfort and an extra two bunk beds can be added on request. There are four principal bedrooms (three with one large bed and one with twin single beds), plus an optional extra bunk room. There are three nice bathrooms (including one en-suite with the master bedroom), which have recently been upgraded and feature either a tub or a powerful shower – or both. There’s a modern kitchen (with an electric Aga stove and a wide array of other equipment) and a large day room equipped with satellite TV, wi-fi, an eclectic library and a DVD player. The piece de resistance is the spectacular 440 sq. ft. lower level River Room with its terrace right beside the river, offering amazing views over the water to the wild scenery beyond. The cottage has oil-fired underfloor heating and a large wood-burning stove.

Close to excellent salmon and trout fishing and surrounded by popular hillwalking trails, Waterfall Cottage is just 20 miles from the pretty Georgian town of Westport with its championship golf course, the spectacular Westport House and a range of interesting shops. The nearest village, Leenane in County Galway, is eight miles to the southeast and the small town of Louisburgh is eleven miles to the north. The beautiful Killary Fjord is just two miles away and there are a number of spectacular sandy beaches, some good for surfing, within a short drive of the property. With the Delphi Adventure Resort less than a mile down the road, there is no shortage of outdoor activities for those who are so minded – kayaking, zip wires, mountain biking, archery and abseiling are all on the menu. For the less energetic, they also have a great spa. The cottage is slap bang in the middle of the Delphi Estate, famous for its salmon fishing. The whole area is an angler’s paradise. The Delphi Valley and Doolough Pass are among the last truly unspoilt areas of western Europe and represent nirvana for nature lovers. Otters, pine martens, badgers, peregrines and mountain hares are regularly sighted and the river beside the property is home to many dippers and the occasional kingfisher. For basic food shopping, the essentials can be bought from the village store in Leenane, where petrol is also available.
